Whereas Superman entered the fight with brawn, Batman came with brains. Between the suit and his fists, Batman subdues Superman, but at a personal cost. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Movie Justice or revenge Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. Knowing that he would not be able to beat Superman using his own strength, he arrives in a mechanized suit and with back-up in the form of an aging Green Arrow (who delivers a kryptonite arrow) and new Robin recruit Carrie Kelly. The fight that follows is bloody and dirty, but Batman comes prepared. They send Superman - now a lackey who spends his free time taking down Soviet nukes - to stop the grizzled Batman. The comic sees an older Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to fight crime in Gotham, much to the displeasure of the American government. It’s Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, however , that sets a tone for future fights to come. Though brutal, the plan works, creating a stalemate between the two and setting up the dynamic that would continue to define their fights. In John Bryne's Man of Steel, Batman informs Superman that he already has a contingency plan if the Kryptonian ever attempted to stop his crime-fighting - a failsafe that would trigger bombs all over Gotham if Superman dared to lay a finger on him. The Crisis allowed the two heroes to meet again for the very first time, with Batman already one step ahead. Batman especially leans into his intelligence, creating specific plans to stop the man of steel. Post- Crisis continuity is where the tension truly amps up, making Golden Age battles between the two seem charming and tame in comparison.
